Exhibiting! – 24th August 2020

As the weeks pass by there has been the dawning on all of us that ‘the new normal’ will be with us for a long while and that was, I think, behind the desire to evaluate where I am now. I have missed exhibiting and having a stand at events, discussing the antique textiles that I have taken along and the stories in my books to visitors.

I decided to hold my own exhibition of work that I had completed during the last six months.

It sort of justifies my own existence!

So I put up my books, front side

Reverse

And from the top left; ‘Memories from the Collection’

‘A Piece of Cloth’

‘Half a yard of Memories II’ Stitch

‘Half a Yard of Memories III Lace

From bottom left ‘A Cut in the Cloth’

‘Half a yard of Memories I’ Woven

’96 Fragments of Memory’

‘Half a Yard of Faded Memories’

I can now see what I have achieved and I feel content.

If you are interested in any of these books then please contact me. The prices vary between £30 and £50 including postage.

Still Small Steps – 10th August 2020

I had an idea that fell within the “Half a Yard” series, so I went with it.

Like many people it was, and still is difficult to settle and it had taken me until the 1st of June to begin the series. See here. Before I printed my third plate I used the plate to emboss two lengths onto 250gsm Somerset paper and put them to one side and on rifling through my prints I came across them and had an idea.

I trimmed the paper and folded it into six. I then cut painted tissue paper to mirror the design, stuck it onto the reverse, wrapped them in plain tissue paper and into the book press.

Here is the front and back.

I know how I’m going to construct and cover the folded books but so far it’s been too hot to think about a session of painting papers in the studio, and it’s not often you say that in Yorkshire!.

The other book related activity that I have done is to fold my last set of prints into two styles of books. I hope that by the time I write my next blog I will have three different boos to show you

What to Do? – 27th July 2020

I am pleased with the print that resulted from my last plate, which featured in my last blog. All those edges that needed to be clean can be difficult but, I am now putting the ink on with an old artists paintbrush and it’s working well.

As with many of my plates I cut them down to create other books or cards. However here I have paused, to get 4 prints from one plate isn’t many and there were no ideas emerging. I took some photocopies for me to cut up to see what would work. I am still pausing!

Before Lockdown and the current situation I had been planning to create some larger and more complex books. I had my pieces for my 2020 events and a slight change in direction seemed interesting. As we all know the world changed and I made my way back into my art practice with my “Half a Yard of Memories” series. However, as I could see the present situation lasting a while I  made the decision to return to the larger and more complex books, but then I dithered and made cards – ( the last batch proved very popular). As the size of the cards is dependant upon the size of print I now have the envelopes to make.

Would it be sensible to save the larger projects until the winter when I can’t garden? Is that a dilemma, a good idea or just putting something of?
