Small Beginnings – 20th April 2020

Like many people in these difficult times I am finding it hard to settle, weeding the garden is fine, not too taxing, but to follow a constructive path has been challenging.

I decided to paint some papers

I set it all out

I was taken by my mixing trays and was pulled back to the origins of these small containers – they were the microwave/freezing dishes for my sons baby food and he is now in his mid 30’s!

Memories, so important at the minute. The notion of memories kept repeating itself and then in a flash – “Half a yard of Memories” I like a good title to get me going and help me along a creative path.

I marked out three book formats and sketched out some ideas and progress was made. It seems important to be doing something whilst self isolating. The books will be small, to be held in the hand and treasured like memories. Let’s see where the idea takes me.

Feeling a little more contented

Slow Progress – 19th March 2020

The difficult and challenging times that we are all living at the moment can frequently invade our thoughts and it seems to me to be important to enjoy being distracted and think about other things so that we can more cheerfully cope on a day to day basis.

My printing and bookmaking have been slow but it feels good to record progress. I have framed all my book wall pieces, see above for one of them.

I have been following the idea of “The Collection” which I have written about before.

Here are the grey board templates, 5.5 x 8cm, to emboss into the Somerset 300 gsm paper about to go through the press.

And then I printed small, 2cm, blind prints from several plates.

When they were dry I arranged them into the sections, I needed 16 section with six were section.

Then there were some stitches added and double sided adhesive stuck to the reverse.

They are now awaiting being inserted into the template recesses.

Practicalities – 27th February 2020

Now that the euphoria of being selected for Printfest and Turn the Page has slightly ebbed there are practical things to be dealt with and the last couple of weeks has seen me concentrate upon books that are to be placed into frames to be hung on the wall and my stationary and packaging.

I have completed four books for frames. Deadlines do concentrate ones mind and I know that I am well head of forthcoming dates but problems do arise like the box frames that I ordered for the books came back the wrong size and will have to be remade, but thankfully I’m still OK.

Also made paper bags and business cards

An idea that has been roaming around my mind for several months now is that of ‘The Collection’ and what that means. I have made a couple of books on that theme and I have started measuring out another couple with tiny blind prints to see how the proportions work – always good to have work in progress and to be problem solving.

We have had terrible weather lately, and watching water levels, hail and snow can be distracting as  can also be this pheasant who struts up and down the garden, puffing himself up, showing off his feathers and squawking looking for a lady pheasant. I do hope that he finds one soon !
